They ran a 255/40/17 vs a 245/40/17, both Dunlop Direzzas on the same wheel, and the 245 was half a second faster around an autocross course. Though it's only a single data point, it would seem a shorter, stiffer side wall, even if only marginally shorter, is definitely the way to go for a tight course with lots of left/right transitions. Larger, softer sidewalls are pretty much known to be better in a straight line. It would be interesting to see if a mix of different performance tires showed the same difference the Direzzas did.
